Renato Ratier feat Pillowtalk – Home Boys [D-Edge Records]
The prospect of a collaboration between American do-woppers and soul/funk trio Pillow Talk and D Edge owner is tasty indeed, and that’s how it proves. This EP is a precursor to Ratier’s full-length album coming on D Edge and serves as a fine entrée.
The EP kicks of with Home Boys, the excellent title track. This is the sort of organic and heartfelt music that you remember after a night out. Arpeggiated chords and nimble melodic stabs bring colour as well defined drums and well swung percussion does the physical side of things in great style.Top Brazilian producer Dubshape is enlisted to remix and he makes the thing even more deep and fluid, with colourful but muted chords imbuing the track with plenty of heat. The last cut might just be the best – it’s a beautifully emotive and sweet arrangement of house claps and kicks and soulful chords and floating vocals that really soothes your soul at the same time as making you dance.
