Gerry Read ‘Crave b/w Enjoy A Day Out’

Digital / Vinyl

Fourth Wave / Released June 2013

Subtle but very weighty indeed, RAMP records imprint Fourth Wave comes up trumps again with proof that all an EP really needs to be filed under the ‘Essential’ category is one really good tune on the A side, and another on the B.

Heavy house or groovy techno would be two ways to describe both lead track and the flip, as sledgehammer drums and raw hi hats fall somewhere between boompty boomp and slamming, like Mark E only a little less disco and heads down. Crave, for example, boasts deep synth lines and organ stabs, but becomes a far more up front experience once those kicks drop in. In contrast, Enjoy A Day Out is more staccato in feel, purposefully built to highlight its looped foundations as slighty off-rythms four fours underpin a filthy, and pleasingly simple vocal hook, building until finally letting go in unabashed fist-punching, bass pumping glory. Deceptively complex, considering there’s not a huge amount comprising either track, we’d definitely include this on any upcoming shopping list.
