A TRAGEDY has befallen the Leeds clubbing landscape. The Garage – voted DJ Mag’s Best Small Club in 2012 – this month closed its doors. The people behind the legendary club are currently questing for a new and improved venue. WATCH THIS SPACE!
The Garage is a love project curated by local bar owner Stephen Hawkins, Back to Basics residents Tristan Da Cunha and Frenchy, and artist Victoria Topping. Designed by lovers of music for lovers of music, the multi faceted venue featured the kind of attention to detail that made it one of the UK’S most fresh and unique creative spaces. A very sad loss.
Having quickly established itself as the finest underground nook for house, techno and disco parties – as well as being Leeds only dedicated electronic music record store – the powerful little club played host to the likes of Back to Basics, Redshape, Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall, Steffi. the list goes on.
There’s no dramatic story here. No skullduggery, no angry council/neighbours and no rat infestation – just a bum of a landlord who won’t extend to the tenancy. How boring.
With the team busy squirrelling away to procure said ‘spanky new venue’ – they hope to be up and running by Christmas. OBVIOUSLY they’ll be taking with them ALL the best bits from The Garage, whilst adding a fresh dose of juicy innovation.
All promotions will stay with the club, including Back To Basics, Beatstreet, Bigger Than Barry, SetOneTwenty and Nest. We look forward to the next era for The Garage collective.
