It was the biggest hip-hop event Britain had ever seen, featuring the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Africa Bambaattaa, and World Class Wreckin’ Cru to name but a few. Needless to say then, when UK Fresh ’86 went off, it went off big time.
Skip forward 25 years and a lot has changed in urban music, and electronic breakbeats. But one constant has been the impact Street Sounds has had on both scenes, not least because of the aforementioned super show, the highly sought after Electro series of EPs, and the numerous artist launched as a result of the imprint. All of which means when the label takes over Scala this Saturday night for the UK Fresh Reunion the party should be well worth checking out.
Playing records and generally making noise on the evening will be original pioneers like the living legend Arthur Baker, Captain Rock, Newcleus, The B Boys, and Greg Edwards. It might surprise a few to learn that the host will be none other than Dave Pearce, though realising he’s the guy who presented the BBC’s first rap show, and was the voice that once introduced the likes of Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Whodini, and The Beastie Boys at early Def Jam shows in Hammersmith should make it all make a bit more sense.
