Behind the scenes of Pierre Reynold’s ‘Day & Night EP’

Pierre Reynolds lives and breathes House music, from falling in love with the music back in 1993 at the age of 15 to now DJ’ing internationally and producing some of the best House tracks around. This infectious 2-track EP contains all the ammunition you need to rock the club – groovy beats, deep basslines, infectious vocals samples, perfect piano stabs, and chilled Latin vibes. Pierre talks us through his tips and tricks and inspirations behind the ‘Day & Night’ EP.

How do you compare ‘Day & Night’ to your other releases?

The ‘Day & Night’ EP is a departure from my usual style. The track ‘Night’ especially has a depth and deep vibe that most of my current catalogue does not.

What are 3 words that describe your experience creating this record?

Bumpin, Melodic, Danceable

What is your favourite DAW?

Acid Pro 8

Is there anyone you would love to work with in the future?

Black Coffee and Louie Vega

How would you describe your music to someone who has not heard it before?

My music is dedicated to the dance floor. The tracks are created to service the dancer. My music is groovy and melodic with drive.

What was your core idea behind this EP?

I wanted two tracks that would have a stark contrast. ‘Night’ is inspired by what I would want to hear in a nightclub atmosphere. ‘Day’ comes from more of a bright day party environment.

Did you teach yourself the art of production or did you have a mentor?

I taught myself. I made my first track back in 2002 but no one will ever hear that! I honestly did not master my preferred DAW until 2008; then it wasn’t until 2016 that I proved to myself I could create exactly what I wanted. It’s a long process.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in producing?

Decided if this is something you really want to do and then dedicate the necessary time to learning your equipment. Good production does not come overnight. It will take serious time and focus to create good music.

What is your dream label to release on and why?

Defected! To me, they represent the pinnacle of artistry and passion. If I were ever to release a track with them I would be absolutely elated!

Describe to us the creative process of this EP?

Each track had its own distinct process. With ‘Night’ I searched for videos of big nightclubs with huge production setups. I would turn off the sound and just think to myself what kind of track would just take everyone to the next level. The bass line was the first piece of the track that came to mind. Once I had the low end in place the percussion came easy. The organ melody took a few days to decide on but once I arrived at what you can hear in the track, I knew it was a banger.

The process with ‘Day’ was the exact opposite of ‘Night’. I imagined one of the many WMC Miami day parties I’ve attended. I thought about the shining South Florida sun, blowing breeze and the joy of house music. Once I had that vibe going on the inside I was able to lay out the percussion and chords pretty easily.
