If you’re not yet aware – Oval Space is pretty much venue of the moment. Bethnal Green’s ‘multi-use arts space’ melds the ambience of a warehouse loft with state of the art amenities, and a fresh and innovative program of events. It’s pretty damn shmick.
In just 18 months the space has calmly cemented itself as THE place for forward-thinking music. This is largely due to a string of highly successful shows featuring the skills of ‘Godfather of Techno’ Manuel Göttsching, Innervisions and Jamie Lidell – to name but a few.
Hailed by Time Out as ‘one of the most impressive things to hit London in ages’, the 5,000 sq. ft space has hosted everything from club nights and classical concerts, to craft beer festivals and independent film screenings. As versatile as she is glorious – Oval space pushes into 2014 with a brand new chapter.
Launching on 1st February, Chapter 1 of the Oval Space Music series embraces an eclectic selection of genres and artists. This’ll include Detroit techno pioneers – Robert Hood and Jerome Sydenham; deep house masters DJ QU and Rick Wade; and live electronic acts from Evian Christ and Kollektiv Turmstrasse. Exclusive label showcases can also be expected.
Also fresh for 2014, Oval Space announces two new resident DJs – jozif and Fritz Zander. Having broken through with standout releases on labels Wolf & Lamb and Culprit back in 2010 – Londoner jozif is just as comfy in the booth at Space, as he is crating his trademark mixes. An integral part of Berlin’s house and techno scene, Fritz Zander was heavily involved in the birth of Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control. He’s held the prestigious position of Watergate resident for the past five years.
“2014 couldn’t be a better time for us to develop Oval Space Music, not only for us as a venue but as programmers in our own right. The concept of our upcoming in-house programme has organically grown over the last 18 months as we have developed a sense of what works, what doesn’t and what makes our space truly come alive. Nobody knows the space quite like we do and we hope that these six strikingly different shows convey our diverse appreciation of musical textures and styles, making a deeper imprint into the identity of Oval Space. With careful consideration for how the artists that we love will sound in our venue, we’re very pleased to be able to create an all encompassing experience: lighting, layout, staging and production changes will all play a big part in the upcoming OSM series.” – Hannah Briley, Music Curator
