Plain and Simple’s roving reporter/man about town and clubbing addict Jammy brings you his eye view of the events he was partying at in the last week… This time he spent his jaunts at Rejam, Antidote and Fabric’s 13th Birthday!
Hello and welcome to Jammy’s Jaunts! Your weekly clubbing review of my antics in London. This weekend consisted of the Rejam, Antidote and Fabric’s 13th birthday celebrations. My first jaunt began on Friday at Basing House, where young and upcoming party: Rejam brought their next party into full swing. This time around, they had special guests returning Noi Doi (Romania), who recently headlined for them a few months back, but now at bigger venue and soundsystem. Joining them were residents of the party Nick and Jack and Peter Glasspool. Warming up proceedings was Glasspool, bringing his own sound to Rejam and doing a very good job of warming up. I have only seen him warm up and it definitely set the mood for the beginning of the night. Really nice, tight deep tech house influenced with Rejam groove. It’s always nice to see Rejam back at Basing House and it seems that they have firmly made a good home for themselves. After Peter, was the Rejam duo of Nick and Jack. How far they have come in a matter of a year has been quite spectacular, from warming up for Adam Beyer to their own successful parties, has been a great achievement, especially in London where there are so many parties week in, week out.
By the time they had come on, Basing House had filled up nicely and everyone was enjoying the music and having a good time! The vibe and the atmosphere was typical Rejam and some even saying it was the best Rejam party to date, but I’ll leave that to your own interpretation! The time had come for Noi Doi to come on and they continued the energy that Nick and Jack gave to the crowd and by then Basing House was near to capacity. The music from start to finish was fitting to a great night and their own Romanian infused beats certainly did the job and got the crowd really going! A great party and a good for them to end it. Following on from that, was the afterparty at good friend Tom Burnell’s place where Noi Doi came back to play at. In an abandoned space which could be best described as large garage with a chill out area, the party vibe continued well into the daytime! What a jaunt!
On Saturday the next jaunt was the Antidote night at Cargo. Run by Mark Jones (Dubgraffiti). Headlining this party was Doctor Dru (Jeudi Records) alongside the Antidote residents, Michael L Penman, Dubgraffiti and Yiannis Balkizas. On a rainy Saturday evening the queue to get inside Cargo was already huge by the time we arrived. Dubgraffiti had already begun and the main room was already packed. Cargo’s main soundystem is pretty good and there was a good vibe generated. Cargo isn’t a place that I would normally spend a night in, but it’s always nice to go there to support a friends’ night and see it doing well at the same time. It was good to see old faces out as well and meeting new ones too, especially when you find out that you have loads in common!
After Dubgraffiti had finished then it was time for the headliner to come on. From Hamburg in Germany, this super slick DJ/Producer and recently teamed up with The Adana Twins brought a really cool house-deep house vibe to the packed Cargo crowd. Sometimes it’s nice to have a mixture of musical genres to listen to, but I know I will always come back to where things should be at: Techno. The night was closed by good friend Yiannis Balkizas. A quality closing set and the crowd staying there right till the end, a definite musical adventure! It was a thoroughly enjoyable night and track after track was pretty special outright. At the end of the day, if the music is good and everyone is having a good time, then that’s all that matters.
At the end of Cargo, the last stop in the Jaunts was a quick visit over to Fabric to celebrate their 13th birthday. What a true establishment to clubbing in London and throughout the world, consistently booking great DJ’s week in and week out! It was pretty good timing as I wanted to catch Sandwell District in room 2 and I made it just in time. From start to finish the duo of David Sumner and Karl O’Connor were exceptional. Whenever I have seen them play, they have always blown me away with their original sound of Techno especially the last time back at Electric Deluxe and at Jaded after. So ruthless and unrelenting and on the room 2 soundystem, it was truly spectacular! Techno the way it should be!
Following Sandwell District was Joris Voorn. Certainly a DJ that has dropped off my radar in recent times and from his performance at Fabric, he reminded me of how he played like 5-6 years ago, when I was really into his stuff. Perhaps now, I may begin to listen to him again? Anyway he started off really well and continued to play quite hard which is always good to hear and even dropping ‘Church of Nonsense’ which is a track I haven’t heard in ages! Near the end of his set, it was time to go and call it a day. What a weekend from start to finish! Great times, great friends and great music! Same time, next weekend? 🙂
