Robsoul Recordings / Released August 2012

What does it sound like?

As if there would be any doubt as to the contents here, Phil Week’s 12-year-old imprint gathers a selection of Chicago legend DJ Sneak’s best work for the label, and issues it all in one hell of a package. Needless to say, fans of dirty, filthy beats will be best catered for.

Opening with Funky Rhythm it’s easy to forget what a Sneak set is actually like. Of course the track in itself is very much what the talented chap is about, proper house music for proper house music fans, yet the loose-beat stepper, and eponymous spoken word lyrics position it well and truly in the traditionalist camp.

Two tunes later though and the artist’s variety, when compared with many of his peers, begins to shine throughIn short, from the percussive Latino loops of Bridgin’ The Gap and Salsa Elektronica, to the boompty boomp jack and acid accents inherent in Move Your Butt, or the raw rhythms and pianos of This Way, here are nine reasons why ‘the original house gangsta’ has retained a reputation for pedigree output since the mid-90s.

What highlights can I expect to hear?

Without a weak cloud in sight it’s all about personal choice, really, and with that in mind we’re opting for Bridgin’ The Gap thanks to those vocal stabs, relentless pace and subtle, rumbling organ melodies.

Where can I buy it?

Beatport.
