What does it sound like?
Spaniards Melohman and Javi Bora, no strangers to places like Ibiza and labels like 20:20 Vision, return to Upon You for another bout of dubby, percussive, but nonetheless unpretentious house music. And by that we don’t mean uninteresting.
In true old school style we’re given an Edit and Original of the title track, along with a remix from Tuccillo. The former two sound similar-ish, with the first throwing hand claps, bongos and a filtered vocal hook into the mix atop a bumbling b-line, creating something part main room fare, part shuffling subtlety- offering something to both the heads of today and yesterday.
In comparison the Original opts for a more expansive ethic, spreading the more audible lyrics and groovier bassline on thick. On the other side of things Tuccillo takes things down deeper routes, coming across somewhere in between the shuffling tech that’s been such a constant in clubs this year and more West Coast flavours. Oh, and there’s a cheeky little digital-only bonus that takes the shape of a classic keyboard-led roller, nodding towards the old Global Underground without coming across as dated- see below.
Where would I dance to it?
Bars and clubs that don’t throw pretence in your face.
What highlights can I expect to hear?
Purely for the well-timed builds and drops the Original wins out for the vinyl pack, but some might argue those opting for a download are getting the best deal, what with the digital only Trotamundos maintaining a high energy level throughout.
