The Midnight Perverts ‘Hooker’s Door’

The Midnight Perverts / Hooker’s Door

Vinyl

Dame Music / Released September 2011

What does it sound like?

Atmospheric would be one word to describe this very appealing little trio from the Dame Music favourite. Hooker’s Door straddles chunky, booty-shakin’ drums, supported with hand claps underpinned by a waddle-groove, and a spooky, erie, or at least slightly confusing 6am moment style hook. So that will be the aforementioned timeless beats occasionally dissipating into sparse, slight but refrained keys.

In contrast Halea sounds like hallucinogenic pop, if there even is such a thing, and wouldn’t sound out of place on BPitch Control’s ever-varied compilations, with We Love, one of said label’s newer acts, also providing a decent comparison. Here though the only vocals have been heavily filtered and vocoder’d, while the confident drum machine carves out a rhythm that makes it clear this is intended for the club, with a wholly electro vibe accentuated by a melody that suggests a hint of melancholy. Finally we’re given Miss Jools’ interpretation of the A-side, focusing more attention on the hardly-present-at-all vocals of the source material while opting for more classic, soulful tones.

Where would I dance to it?

If 2011 is the year of house music then pretty much everywhere no doubt.

What highlights can I expect to hear?

Simply for its ‘you don’t get this everyday’ aspect Halea is bound to stand out the most. Whether you could play it often or not is another point altogether, and if struggling we’d say opting for the original Hooker’s Door is going to get the most work out of any dancefloor.

Why should I pay for it?

If there needs to be a reason aside from the music let’s show some respect for quality artwork.

Where can I buy it?

Very good shops.
