For 25 years, Dave Beer and Back To Basics have been at the forefront and cutting edge of dance music and popular culture, always evolving and moving with the times, constantly looking for new talent as well as paying homage to its influences. Now all that knowledge and understanding is getting poured into a brand new and exciting venture, Church, in the heart of Leeds. After a special opening party on September 30th, the likes of Good Life, Cave Rave, Paradise and of course Back to Basics will all hosts events with DJs like DJ Deeon, Jamie Jones, Damian Lazarus, Matthias Tanzmann and many more.
After teaming up with Aaron Mellor (Tokyo Industries) and Peter Hook (New Order), who together own Manchester’s Factory Records and The Haçienda, as well as Digital in Newcastle and South in Manchester, Dave will serve as the club’s creative director and visionary.
Church is located on Woodhouse Lane, and the building is complete with an adjoining 500 capacity chapel, which will double as both a music venue and street food emporium/bar throughout the week. These facilities will be used to teach cooking classes in association with Get Baked, various street food vendors and also Zest, a local charity funded by Jamie Oliver’s Cooking School. As a music venue, this part of the space will facilitate smaller club nights and live music events, also lending itself to the main section for bigger parties. It will be a club by the people, for the people, offering a core group of members perks like discounted entry, their name on the wall and inclusion in the club’s meetings. This group will be named ‘The Brotherhood’ and will be built through members inviting one another, who then have to be seconded by another.
Connected by an outdoor terrace providing a comfortable place to smoke, the old vicarage is the final area of the building and will house a fully creative space, which extends to Dave and Joe Corre – entrepreneur and the spearhead of Agent Provocateur, who is also the son of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood – Back To Basics Music Academy becoming a reality. The space will offer both part time and full time courses teaching digital music and all other creative subjects, giving everyone from undergraduates to the less fortunate and those with disabilities a chance to study their passion, with Beer’s own passion being to give everyone from all walks of life the opportunity to express themselves and be together. The main hall will boast a state of the art sound system that will be adaptable for both live shows and club events. The space will also have a fully isolated mezzanine area that can be utilized as part of the main space or also a second room.
“English clubbing has become substandard with everywhere being the same,” says Dave. “There’s no individuality. This is going to be a safe space for all with no attention to detail spared”. With Church, Dave will be taking everyone to the seminal era of clubs like Studio 54 and The Paradise Garage. “Once you’re through the hallowed doors, you’ll be somewhere otherworldly. Somewhere to express yourself and lose your inhibitions… Expect the unexpected. We are looking forward to giving something back. Come and do your thing, you know the dance. We love you”.
