The Vintage Mobile Disco came about when Russ and Rich (who had both recently moved to Somerset) were introduced to each other at the local pub quiz and discovered their mutual passion for the lost art of the vinyl only, mobile discotheque.
Russ had recently been gifted a complete 1980s mobile DJ set up. His mum’s best friend had been married to a roving DJ, but the fame and attention which went with the lifestyle went to this guy’s head and they parted ways – the DJ never saw the disco again, and it was bequeathed to Russell.
Rich, in his professional capacity as a music lawyer, had worked with some of the world’s biggest and best DJs, but had become a little confused in recent years, with the increasing reliance on memory sticks, CDJs, Ableton and whatnot – he couldn’t understand why many DJs were turning their back on the old ways (likening it to visiting a top chef’s restaurant, only to find that everything was being cooked in the a microwave…).
So together, using only:
Pilfered kit from Russ’s existing mobile disco;
an early 20th centry laundry truck;
a mirrorball attached to Rich’s son’s rotating Fisher Price nightlight; and whatever else was to hand in Russ’s barn.
They lovingly crafted the Vintage Mobile Disco – a charming, homespun alternative to the the sometimes bland and and often soulless set-ups which are found at weddings and functions across the land.
All she needed was a name…
A competition was launched, and the residents of Frome duly delivered. The winning name was “Donna Somerset” – a perfect tribute to her birthplace and to the era to which she belongs.
Music policy is eclectic – there are only 2 rules which we aim to stick to:
We only play 7″ vinyl;
our records should be at least 30 years old.
VMD now have monthly residencies at The Frome Independent and also at Roth Bar and Grill at the Hauser and Wirth Gallery. They’ve also played backstage Glastonbury, a Babington House po.
