ReviveHER Residency w/ Lord of the Isles & Gatto Fritto / Dalston Superstore / Friday May 25th

We would like to thank all those who came down to the last party to catch the very rare appearance by the legendary DJ Nature. All 3 hours of his set was recorded and will be uploaded to our new mixcloud next week, which already has some live RH mixes on it – you can check that out here (http://www.facebook.com/ReviveHER/app_49631911630?ref=ts). There’s also a video in the works from our last party, but until then you can take a glimpse at all the photos on our facebook page here. Our next party is on Friday May 25th and sees two of the most talented electronic music producers to emerge in recent years, Gatto Fritto and Lord Of The Isles!

Lord Of The Isles (Ene / Little Strong / American Standard / Adult Contemporary) – London Debut

Scottish native and exciting new producer Lord Of The Isles (LOTI) has fast been turning heads and moving feet on more discerning dancefloors since a string of well received releases on respected labels such as LA’s Adult Contemporary and American Standard, Japan’s Ene Records and his devastating Hot Blob EP on his own “Little Strong Recordings” in the last year. Having cut his teeth into some equally tasty edits such as his take on Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” on Cole Medina’s label, very little is known of the mysterious producer other than an image from a book about historic Scottish clans, depicting a “MacDonald” who was Lord of the Isles in medieval times.

Lord Of The Isles is today a title of Scottish nobility with historical roots that go back beyond the Kingdom of Scotand, emerging from a series of hybrid Viking/Gaelic rulers of the west coast and islands of Scotland in the Middles Ages. Now this Mr MacDonald has built up a dancefloor nobility of his own.

The LOTI sound sits comfortably between Plant E techno and mid tempo soulful house chuggers, with squelches and bubbles in all the right places. Highly sophisticated deep-disco house movements, encrusted with splurges of sonic texture, he has mastered a sourcery of rare samples, where warm, fluid basslines and epic breakdowns are consistent in all his productions, which take you from Detroit, to Chicago to New York and across the pond to the Balearics. LOTI is equally at home working on tracks such as the “Pacific Affinity” EP on Chida’s Ene label, which has been included on DJ Harvey’s recent X Mix CD. Here, his foray into ambient electronica can be heard, perhaps influenced by the peaceful surroundings of the Isles!

Very rarely does one artist make such an impact with a handful of releases. So much so that he has amassed a long list of both seasoned and new school DJs with support from the masters like David Mancuso, DJ Harvey, Andrew Weatherall through to the disco heads like Danny Wang, Discodromo and natives Fudge Fingaz and Linkwood. LOTI continues to impress with a hectic release schedule this year, with over 8 EPs to come out on labels such as Firecracker offshoot “Unthank”, Discodromo’s Cocktail D’Amore, Phonica Records, Japan’s Catune and Ene Records (including an album!). We await with great anticipation.

With such a talent to spring up from nowhere, it may be of no surprise that Mr MacDonald has actually been buying and playing records since the early 90s, having held down a residency at Raw in Edinburgh for over 6 years. Some of the parts in up and coming releases were written over 6 years ago! There’s no end to the imagination with the wealth of material LOTI is sitting on. Having emerged out of hibernation from the studio, it’s time for the Lord to rule once more. This will be Lord Of The Isles’ debut appearance outside of his native homeland, ahead of a busy summer season. Catch him at ReviveHER first!

Gatto Fritto (International Feel / Dissident / Electric Minds / Hungry Ghost)

Much the same way as LOTI, Gatto Fritto aka Ben Williams, was a DJ first and as a teenager in the mid 90s Ben found himself warming up for Derrick May, Robert Hood and Juan Atkins at Analogue City. A self obsessed vinyl whore, tired of the musical rat race and “the machine”, Ben always finds constant pleasure in the endless discovery and path of hearing new music. His time spent working behind the counter in London’s Music Exchange records shops has given Ben an unrivalled knowledge of music, where his sets take in classic house or techno ( ) or disco, italo, post punk obscurity ( ).

His own productions have been making waves only since the inception of Gatto Fritto and his debut “Invisible College” vinyl only release on Dissident in 2007, which had every DJ in every record shop clamoring over to get their hands on it. Following just a few more releases later, culminated in the “fried cat” being scouted by one of the most revered cult labels of our time, “International Feel”. Ben’s music is as pyschedelic as his colourful past, which can be heard through his eponymous debut album on International Feel “Gatto Fritto”.

Based in Uruguay, IF is renowned for its quality and perfection, be it the music itself, the vinyl cut, the artwork or remixes, where records trade well into the 3 figure mark on discogs. Home to some of the most sought after characters in dance music history such as Harvey, Baldelli, Greg Wilson, Quiet Village and Still Going, Ben shares the label with some pretty legendary names. Proud to host such a new production talent, Gatto Fritto and Harvey’s Locussolus project are the only two to release albums on the label so far. Ben’s other project “Hungry Ghost” with Sam Weaver, is also due to release “A Series Of Strange Loops” this month on Internatonal Feel!

Ben’s remix work includes Franz Ferdinand, Japanese techno act Gonno and most recently Seahawks. Ben’s admirers include giants such as Giles Peterson, who compiled Hex on his MOS compilation, DJ Harvey, Prins Thomas, Andrew Weatherall through to the house and techno masters such as Francois K and Laurent Garnier. Since the album dropped last year, Ben has a been a permanent fixture on the European DJ circuit. Having lost the passion for DJing unnecessarily or prostituting himself for pointless gigs in the past, Ben has spent much of the “Gatto Fritto” years in the studio until now. A Fritto gig in London especially, is a rarity and we’re lucky to have met him in close circles.

The media may touch on chill wave, italo and kosmische, yet expect anything but in a Gatto Fritto set!

Voices Agency (DJ Alex Voices x Johnny Chingas – Lasermagnetic)

Upstairs we welcome DJ sets from Alex Voices and Johnny Chingas. Having set up their agency last year, they’re already looking after luminaries such as DJ Rahaan, Victor Rosado, Bobby Vitteritti, DJ Nature, Lee Dougals, Perseus Traxx amongst others and our next guests, Gatto Fritto and Lord of the Isles (LOTI). With a clear vision of looking back to our musical forefathers to influence the future, they bridge the gap between the now and then and stand for timeless quality. Most artists on their roster, being DJs first, have mastered the art of programming and flawless mixing through long residencies throughout their career. Their unique talent in DJing and heavy weight record collection is something we value too at ReviveHER, which is why you’re unlikely to be disappointed with any of our or sets.

DJ Alex Voices

Alex teamed up with Johnny in 2009 and has revived the interest in real disco and other forms of quality music through some major events with the likes of Casco (RIP) and Danielle Baldelli and Bobby Viteritti. Last year they organized and DJed around the world for a Paradise Garage tour with ex resident Victor Rosado – about the closest DJ experience you’ll get to hear to Larry Levan.

A former member of Stussy UK, Alex has been DJing for nearly 20 years and is as a passionate a DJ as you’ll find. His DJ sets and long standing residency in the 00s at Plastic People have earned him a highly regarded reputation without the need to release a record, resulting in appearances on Beats In Spaces and playing around the world with the likes of Metro Area and Theo Parrish. Being one of the first promoters in London to be connected to the original disco sound, before the nu-disco boom and the onset of facebook and RA mass discovery, he was one of the first to host Eric Duncan, Danny Wang, Darshan Jesrani + more in London. As part of the Voices Sound System, he returned to Plastic People in 2009. Bringing a high end audio experience via their audiophile soundsystem, the collective now bring the sound to you, via a number of new venues. You can keep tabs here. Alex also hosts a longstanding weekly show on Deep Frequency.

Johnny Chingas

Cologne raised Johnny Chingas started life in London in ’94. Raised on a healthy diet of jazz/kraut/new wave and Euro pop in his German youth, he went back to the motherland (Hong Kong) in ’89, which is where he started his DJ career. Having developed his house sensibility with Chinese Godfather Chris Lee, he later moved to Bejing and was responsible for the People’s Republic first ever rave “Shut Up & Dance!” He quickly launched Switch in 90s London, booking Kenny Hawkes (RIP), Joshua Iz, Bugz in the Attic and many more. Switch continued to run in South East Asia via annual tours taking in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Yokohama, Okinawaw and Koh Samui.

However, Johnny is best known for Lasermagnetic. Launched in 2005, Lasermagnetic was responsible for the onset of the new disco boom. He helped break international talent amongst the disco spectrum in the UK, giving Lindstrom and Chromatics their first ever gigs! Lasermagnetic was doing TBA Warehouse East London way before c**ts rinsed the shit out of the idea…and it was disco, not minimal or “bass music”. Lasermagnetic appeared at Fabric, Corsica, Turnmills, The Key, 54 and many other large clubs, that seem days of a bygone era now. Everyone from Clone to DC Recordings, Friendly Fires to Little Boots, Dixon to Metro Area played Lasermagnetic. The list is far too long to read out.

Johnny’s deep record collection hits all the RH boxes and his plethora of global gigs have served him a well reputed notoriety, whether it be the Big Chill Festival in the UK, Cookies in Berlin or Air in Tokyo! Johnny is currently working on the Voices Agency, his pop up cinema Visionare (www.visionare.co.uk) and a feature length documentary about the Italian Cosmic scene and it’s pioneers. So we’re chuffed he can pop down Superstore to spin some records with his artists too!

Men & Machines (Glasgow)

Men and Machines are DJs, promoters and radio hosts originating from Glasgow. They hosted a weekly radio show on Subcity Radio for over five years and their three year residency at Stereo in Glasgow saw them welcome the likes of Optimo, Serge Santiago, Gavin Russom, Efdemin, Shit Robot, Etienne Jaumet, Pantha Du Prince, Luke Abbott, Brandt Brauer Frick and Manuel Gottsching, earning them a reputation as one of Glasgow’s most discerning and forward thinking club nights in the process. They have played at club nights throughout Scotland and beyond, and have recently started a new series of podcasts for Radio Magnetic. This will be their second outing at the Superstore, having played White Leather Viper Club last month. We welcome them back with open arms.
