Influences That Made: Stefanie Black

Following up from her successful release of ‘Winter of my Soul’ earlier this year, Stefanie Black is ready to continue showing the world her intricate and evocative style of music, with effortlessly beautiful vocals touching on some of life’s toughest issues. We wanted to know the influences behind her music, and caught up with her to find out what has helped her forge her own musical identity.

1. Christina Perri – The Words
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xfw8uktdLEc

It’s such a simple song at the first glance, but when listening to the words you instantly connect with her. She has such strong lyrics that instantly hook you. Her songs are perfect for when you can’t describe how you’re feeling and need a song to say it for you.

2. Christina Aguilera – Bound to You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5RAATO3rTE

This song reminds me so much of the bitter sweetness of love. Loving someone and being terrified of getting hurt – and then her amazing voice singing it. Goosebumps song.

3. Les Miserables (10th Anniversary Concert) – One Day More
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IddP8AAIGTQ

I love the musical ‘Les Miserables’ and one of my favourite ensemble numbers is ‘One Day More’. It’s a song about uncertainty, but also hope. I cry every time I hear it.

4. Celine Dion – It’s All Coming Back To Me Now
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDxoj-tDDIU

This one is all about being strong after a lost love, and the music and lyrics combined with Celine’s voice just make this song so special. I usually listen to it when I’ve just gone through some ‘love-problems.’

5. Helene Fischer – In Diesen Nächten
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trryIbfHvCo

When I listen to this song, it makes me think of a love that I will someday have. It describes a love so strong that I will do anything for this person, and love them unconditionally. Helene has such a beautiful and powerful voice, and it just makes this song perfect.

6. Demi Lovato – Stone Cold
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAeuPonmwXc

I know the feeling of loving someone only to have them then love someone else and having to deal with the pain. I feel this song expresses so much and Demi sings it so amazingly. I can connect so much with the song.

7. Miley Cyrus – When I Look At You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIqimoNyEBQ

I heard this the first time when it came out in the film ‘The Last Song’ and loved how it was so open, honest and pure. The lyrics really made me feel something. I was always a huge fan of Miley as a kid and admired her anyway, and then when she sang ‘When I Look At You’ it made me admire her more.

8. Phantom of the Opera – Point Of No Return
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-ZAgfR_Ck0

I love musicals and when I finally got to see Phantom of the Opera live, I got to hear ‘Point Of No Return’ sung live and loved it even more than I did before. I loved the dramatic music and the ‘seductive’ singing.

9. Christina Perri – Human
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX9E2xuc7nU

Another Christina Perri song! I love how this song reminds us all that we are all the same, and that we are all just human. It reminds us that we can only push ourselves to our limits and that we can only give our best.

10. Les Miserables (10th Anniversary Concert) – On My Own
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjfmP7h3gBw

Another song from my favourite musical. It shows us that someone can make our days colourful and beautiful and when they are gone they can also make them dull and empty.
