Plain and Simple’s roving reporter/man about town and clubbing addict Jammy brings you his eye view of the event he was partying at in the last week… We welcome him back and this time he spent his jaunts at Rhythmatic’s 6th birthday bash and Fabric’s 14th birthday celebrations!
Hello and welcome to Jammy’s Jaunts! Your weekly clubbing review of London! This jaunt featured the very special double birthday weekender with Rhythmatic and Fabric respectably being both 6 and 14 years old. Headlining up their special bash over at The Sidings was Moritz Van Oswald (Basic Channel, Maurizio), Petre Inspirescu (A:RPIA:R) and special support from Rhythmatic residents Stathis Lazarides B2B Archie Hamilton and Wesley Razzy. Arriving around midnight to The Sidings, it was clear a lot of time and effort was put in to make this a great birthday celebrations for Rhythmatic. The Sidings is not always the best place in my opinion to put on a party and can be hard work but from what I gathered, the Rhythmatic crew seemed to pull it off. The party was held over one arch and by the time I got there, there was a decent amount of people and it was growing. I managed to catch a bit of the Lazarides B2B Hamilton action which was warming up the Rhythmatic crowd and it was nice to see a lot of familiar faces in the crowd having a great time.
Nice deep throbbing bassline grooves came out of a decent sounding soundsystem and it was perfect for their party and the crowd. As time passed the room filled up nicely and the main room was about three quarters full. The 2 Rhythmatic headliners finished really well and set things up really well for Moritz Can Oswald to come on at 01:30. He played until 03:00 and it was nice to catch him again, after seeing him play many months ago back at Fire for the ‘Lost’ party with Jeff Mills. He kept the groove and the vibe going and I’m pretty sure this was a good education in musical tastes for the Rhythmatic faithful and a strong headliner to have at their party. Everything flowed really well and Moritz delivered a very good performance. He came off to a massive ovation after his set and he really provided music of the highest class. Next up was Petre Inspirescu (Pedro) from Arpiar, the well known Romanian collective featuring the likes of Raresh and Rhadoo. Pedro played a 3 hour set from 03:00 – 06:00 and it was full of the usual deep Romanian infused beats that is so common now with this collective. It was an energetic start from the flat capped Romanian hero and his first few tracks were met by massive cheers. I have seen Pedro played many times before as his own and as RPR and I prefer him more to the other two. I stayed for an hour of his set and it was thoroughly enjoyable until it was time to head over to Fabric to take part in their 30 hour birthday celebration!
Heading to Fabric around 04:30 I caught the beginning of Marcel Dettmann’s 5 hour set in room 2. Opening the room at 23:00 – 01:00 was Terry Francis, Cosmin TRG 01:00 – 03:30, Shed 03:30 – 04:30. As I arrived at Fabric it was straight to room 2 to see the beginning of Dettmann. The room wasn’t too packed and it was nice and comfortable to dance in. It was again good to see so many familiar faces there and Dettmann certainly didn’t let up. His start was raw and full of energy and the first 2 hours flew by. The set was so well thought through and his skill and expertise behind the decks was excellent to see. He worked the crowd so well and everyone was loving it. Nowadays it’s great for DJ’s such as Dettmann to play a nice long 5-6 hour set to really build up the crowd and to take them on the journey through the wonders of ‘avant-garde’ music.
It was hard to leave that room for any amount of time so, strategic and specially time breaks were taken and to last the pace of the weekend, as the usual readers of the Jaunts well know! Consistency and efficiency is the key here. He continued to smash it and just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it did! Time and time again he played the right tracks at the right time. I have seen Dettmann play countless times and every time he does play, it’s a real treat to fans and to the purists out there. It was perfect for him and he really looked like he was in his comfort zone. Five hours turned into six hours and as 09:30 arrived, we all thought his last tune was going to come, but his massive build-ups and breakdowns were all false! He kept it going and never looked like coming off.
It was amazing to have another hour of Dettmann and I could have seriously heard him play all morning and night long. Eventually he finally packed it in at 10:30 after a mammoth 6 hour session. It was such a pleasure to see him play for that length of time, which is the norm for a DJ of his grandeur and stature. Once everyone had vacated room 2 it was time for a few hours in room 1 before I went home. The ever present Ricardo Villalobos was on the decks for his usual Fabric birthday set and going from Dettmann techno to what Villalobos was playing was surprisingly refreshing. He played much better than the last time I saw him play and I really enjoyed the uplifting groove and bassline that he was powering through the room 1 soundsystem. The odd bit of techno was thrown in for good measure and I have always respected him for the style of techno he plays. It was a special birthday occasion and for sure he definitely ramped up his style for the adoring Fabric massive! I loved celebrating Fabric’s birthday in style and have been for the last 6 or so years. Long may it continue as a true clubbing establishment in London and for the rest of the clubbing world. Wow! What a jauntiful weekend! Same time, next weekend?! 😀
