Plain and Simple’s roving reporter/man about town and clubbing addict Jammy brings you his eye view of the event he was partying at in the last week… We welcome him back and this time he spent his jaunts at Tryptik and Machine.
Hello and welcome to Jammy’s Jaunts! Your weekly clubbing review of London! This jaunt covered the very special Tryptik night with Surgeon, Redshape (live), Dense and Pika, Antonio De Angelis and Michael Wells and on the Saturday the return of the formidable Machine night featuring residents Kirk Degiorgio and Ben Sims and special guests ROD and RØDHÅD. So kicking off proceedings on the Friday was the Tryptik night over in Hackney Wick. On a night that was absolutely lashing it down with rain it was interesting to check out a venue that I have never been to before. Going through the small walk way, the room opened up with the bar on one side of the dancefloor and the DJ booth/area on the opposite side. It was a decent sized venue and definitely has potential for many other parties to be there with a good soundsystem brought in, in my opinion. Arriving quite early on and warming up proceedings was Weekend Circuit’s very own Michael Wells.
He was laying down his usual throbbing techno warmup and it was good to catch him play and build up the crowd. It was also nice to see good representation out on such a miserable rainy evening when this sort of weather does put many people off coming out. Next up was One More’s Antonio De Angelis who in my opinion played really well and was really impressed with the tracks he was dropping. A real nice mix of thunderous basslines and real deep melodic percussive tracks. By then place had nicely filled up and the crowd were really up for it! Definitely worth checking out if you have never heard/seen him play before. Dense and Pika (live) were up next and unfortunately, only one half of the duo turned up with Glimpse playing. The last time I saw Dense and Pika played, was a few months back at Crucifix Lane when they were warming up for Lucy and they did a really good job back then and at the Tryptik night, Glimpse I thought he worked the crowd really well considering he didn’t have his partner in crime with him.
Next up was the man with the red mask: Redshape (live). I’ve always been a fan of his music and also his alter ego Palisade which he uses a white mask to play. His Boiler Room video also is very good if you get a chance to see it. He was on top form and his deep dubby techno kept the crowd wanting more and he really didn’t disappoint! Some people mentioned that the soundsystem was too loud but I felt it was perfect for the size of the room. So last but not least, the main man himself: Surgeon. If there was someone who would be the epitome of Techno in the UK, it would be Anthony Child. I have seen him play countless times and every single time he has been simply and absolutely utterly destructive. Such an amazing servant to Techno. His style of Techno from start to finish was flawless and his head down style of playing was the norm with relentless Techno which the whole crowd were loving and it truly was great to see him play again. It was a shame that he didn’t play until the end of his set and for some reason it was cut short, but nevertheless the performance was of the highest quality!
Next up on Saturday was the very special Machine night at Corsica Studios with special headliners ROD and RØDHÅD alongside residents Ben Sims and Kirk Degiorgio. Spilt over two rooms the stage was set for the 2 main headliners to play their usual extended set that they are so accustomed to. In the main room, Kirk Degiorgio from 22:00 – 02:00 and RØDHÅD from 02:00 – 06:00. In the second room was Ben Sims from 22:00 – 01:00, ROD 01:00 – 04:00, Ben Sims 04:00 – 06:00. As I got there around midnight, Kirk was banging out the warmup so hard! It was very good and the main room was already comfortably filled. They have that soundsystem at Corsica so finely tuned there in my opinion and it really showed as it was getting a real seeing to by Kirk. In the second room, Ben was dropping his usual funk driven techno gems and it was nice to stay in the room to fully appreciate the tracks that he was playing.
As I was going between the 2 rooms, it was so hard to stay in one room for a good period of time but I made the most of it as ROD came on. This was the first time I had seen him play and I really enjoyed his sound. By the time he came on, there was a really nice crowd there and the room was really pumping. Over in the main room RØDHÅD had come on and he was the one that I was really looking forward to seeing. The last time I saw him was at One More a few months back where he was pretty amazing and completely destroyed it and this time around. His 4 hr set was really outstanding.
He stole the show and throughout his set, his track selection was of the highest quality. You really needed to be there to fully experience how good he was. If you never have seen RØDHÅD play before, I strongly advise you see him play as he made 4hrs fly by within a blink of an eye and the room was absolutely packed to see him play. With the powerful soundystem in the main room, it was a real treat to see him play and educate the fine London Techno masses. As I have said, time and again, London has had it so good for so many years now and long many it continue! What a great weekend for Techno in London! Same time, next weekend? 😀
