Around the world in 80 labels: TAPE

Given the temperatures Britain has been experiencing over recent weeks it’s logical that we find sticking in Blighty, kind of, on a mission to draw attention to another record releasing organisation we can’t seem to get enough of. Without further ado then, we’ll proceed with the introductions.

The guys behind TAPE, AKA Daniel Cross and Dan Garber, have made it their goal to unearth a wide range of electronica and pop sounds from their joint bases in Barcelona and London. Already responsible for introducing us to Femme (who  fans of Lykke Li and Little Boots are likely to appreciate), and Josep Xorto (an artist who seems to be informed by 80s synthdom more than anything else), like any appreciative student we decided to show some thanks to our teachers by inviting them in to answer six questions on running the label. Here’s exactly what the answered in response.

Describe your imprint’s output.
It’s multi-genre and multi-territory, currently we are working with three incredibly talented artists and one producer all from different places and with different sounds.

What would you say makes it different?
TAPE at its core is about artist development, we try to help musicians who we believe in and who we believe can have commercial success, and we provide them a full range of management services, at the beginning of an artist’s career this can include releasing as a label. For each artist we build a strong team of independent specialists around them, who all understand the artist and can grow with them as they gain profile. It’s not about making a quick buck.

What is it that makes you keep looking for new talent to expose?
Don’t know, strange isn’t it? But on we go… there is so much out there thats not getting the love it deserves, we hope to do our part in changing that.

What’s the label’s pinnacle achievement so far?
We’ve had approximately a sync per month for our artists in the last year, that’s been a major support in allowing us to continue what we do.

If people were going to hear one release from your camp, what would you prefer it to be?

Impossible, but here’s a three track soundcloud set of  current favourites, including FEMME, Josep and Afriquoi.

All being well, skip forward five years, where would you like things to be?
We’d like our existing portfolio of artists to be making it big and have a bunch of new talent coming through, we like to expand from Barcelona and London, and be in New York and Berlin too. We’d like to disrupt the industry so that a good song is recognised for being a good song rather than who you know and how much cash you have.
