andhim – The Wizard Of Us EP [Get Physical]
German duo andhim have been making music for a couple of years now, and with great results on some fine labels. Their career highlight to date, though, will surely be this EP on the esteemed Get Physical label coming out of Berlin. It features two idiosyncratic tracks that don’t kowtow to modern penchants for Kerri Chandler deep house, but instead come over as layered, emotional things with plenty of musicality in them.
Hausch is a very musical thing with lazy, swaying drums and plenty of soft melodies, humming organ lines and a sombre sense of mood pervading the whole thing. The production is fresh and sounds as if played by real people rather than generated in a computer and the soulful vocal that soars quietly above the whole thing screams to be played out in summer. On the other hand the title track is a more direct and dancefloor focussed thing with a funky but incessant hook oscillating up the heart of the tracks as much warmer and more downbeat chords ooze out of the background. It’s lovely stuff that will keep you dancing til morning.
