Soundcrash presents DJ Yoda

DJ Yoda is joined by a heavy-duty lineup of serious turntable talent at KOKO on Sunday May 5. Flying in from the States for an exclusive set is A Tribe Called Quest’s DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad and beat junkie J.Rocc for two rare DJ sets. UK DMC champ DJ Vadim and UK hip hop’s Mr Thing top it off with The Last Skeptik, for one of the biggest hip hop events of the year.

A Tribe Called Quest DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad is an integral part of ATCQ’s iconic productions, Ali joined J-Dilla and Q-Tip in the collective The Ummah after ATCQ’s breakup and then later formed Lucy Pearl with Raphael Saadiq. One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 which became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s and was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events. Selectors don’t get much more respected than this.

Last Skeptik has come a long way from building his first beats whilst skipping classes at school. From releasing his first 12” single in 2004 featuring Sway, he has been steadily gaining fans with his production wizardry. Fast forward to 2013 and The Last Skeptik has released two albums, the first being with rapper Rewd Adams, and the second, a highly anticipated instrumental project for BBE Records. Add to that residencies at Livin Proof and Knew Knowledge and a blinding showcase SXSW, he brings something very special to the KOKO stage.

Having been tipped by ‘Q Magazine’ as one of the Top 10 DJs to see before you die, and voted alongside DJ Premier as one of the Top Three DJs in the World by ‘Hip Hop Connection’, DJ Yoda is one of the world’s principal AV artists. Part dancefloor-destroying selector, part turntablist supreme, he has been amazing audiences and winning fans worldwide since the early-Noughties. In support, genre-breaking innovator DJ Vadim and Mr Thing, always ready to take a party by the scruff of the neck and make it go nuts with their infectious boom bap ways. Expect nothing but fresh beats, explosive sounds and eye-popping visuals!

With a booming sound system and cinema-sized screen KOKO is the perfect for location for this multi-sensory experience. And, as one of only two audiovisual sets DJ Yoda plays in London this year, this a rare don’t-miss treat! Not to mention, the unbelievable hip hop credentials in support.
