Plain and Simple’s roving reporter/man about town and clubbing addict Jammy brings you his eye view of the event he was partying at in the last week… This time he spent his jaunts at the Born Electric Party and Void.
Hello and welcome to Jammy’s Jaunts! Your weekly clubbing review of London! Last weekend’s jaunts consisted of the Born Electric night at the Electric Brixton and the Void daytime party at 1001. So straight into the action on a wet and miserable night was James Zabiela’s and Mouj’s new label night called ‘Born Electric’. Playing for that night was Gang Colours (DJ Set) 22:00 – 23:00, Pangaea 23:00 – 00:00, Glimpse (live) 00:00 – 01:00, DJ T 01:00 – 02:30, James Zabiela 02:30 – 04:30 and The Advent (live) 04:30 – 06:00. I got there just as Glimpse was playing and the dance floor was pretty much full already. I have been to this venue a few times before earlier on in the year, most notably for the Cocoon, Electric Deluxe and Carl Cox’s Revolution night. It was nice to return back there after so long and experience the atmosphere of the Electric. There was a really mixed crowd there and it made for interesting viewing and comparisons to the different parties and venues that I visited before. The cloakroom was upstairs near the balcony which was a bit of a mission to get to. I had to pass through a long narrow corridor going down small steps and eventually I was able to put my coat in. I thought it would take a while, but in the end it was ok.
So back to the main dance floor, the soundsystem was pretty good there, a little on the bassier side in my opinion, but clear nonetheless. Glimpse smashed it and it was pretty hard when we arrived. He played a live hour set and was impressive. Next up was DJ T, head of the Get Physical label with M.A.N.D.Y. He played a really groove tech-house set and by then it was difficult to enter the dance floor as the place was full and the dance floor was quite chaotic! I was quite content to grooving at the back near the bar and that’s where I stayed for most of the night. DJ T’s set was pretty cool and he had the crowd in his hands and with every drop, they went pretty crazy, and with all the lights it was pretty incredible to see. Check the jaunts page and my page for a couple of videos that I took. He only played for an hour and a half and it seemed to fly by.
He warmed up excellently for the main man to take the main stage: James Zabiela. This was the first time I have ever heard him play and the minute he took to the stage, the crowd erupted! It was really special to see. The first track he dropped smashed it from the word go! The lasers came out and it was a real spectacle to see, all the time swiping the long, curly blonde locks away from his face! Like I mentioned before the lasers came out to play and it really made Zabiela’s set even special and for those 2 hours he gave a pacy and energetic performance. Some tracks I recognised and towards the end it did get quite hard which is always good to hear! A really cool venue with good music. You can’t really go wrong, definitely a venue to check out in 2013 if you haven’t already been there. By the time Zabiela had finished it was time to leave as good friend Ceri was warming up for Jaded.
Next trip along the Jaunt way was the special daytime Void party at 1001 featuring Chris Page. Alongside Chris, playing this time for Void was Dave Johnys, Ashley Borg, DLSL and Randolph. I arrived just at the tail end of Ashley Borg’s set and as always the techno was coming out full and fast! The Void way! This was roughly the time at 1001 where a queue was beginning to form outside and slowly but surely the place began to fill. I was quite tired by then but I managed to power through and reach to the end. Randolph’s set was good and was a great warm-up for Chris Page. By the time he came on, the crowd filled 1001 comfortably and everyone was really up for it! Even a bit of ‘La La Land’ from Green Velvet sent the crowd pretty wild and the strobe that was installed made things that even sweeter! Got to love a good strobe!
As you can imagine at a Void party, things went off and the techno was full on. I definitely recommend this party in 2013 if you like your techno, and want a really good time! Chris Page really did some damage and just listening to the techno gave me a second wind to continue right to the end. It was a cool turnout too and was nice to catch up with everybody that was there. What a great jaunt of a weekend and what a year of partying! I hope you all caught my review event list of the year.
