Plain and Simple’s roving reporter/man about town and clubbing addict Jammy brings you his eye view of the events he was partying at in the last week… This time he spent his jaunts at The Boiler Room Part 2, Rejam, Antidote and CLR.
Hello and welcome to Jammy’s Jaunts! Your weekly clubbing review of London! Last weekend consisted of the Boiler Room Part 2 with Surgeon, Regis and Karenn, Rejam with Daniel Bell, Antidote and the very special CLR night with Chris Liebing and many others. So the first jaunt began on Tuesday in a top secret location in East London. It was pretty exciting as this was my second Boiler Room and after the last one, I couldn’t really say no! You wait for so long and two come one after the other! Typical, it always happens! Anyway I’m lucky to have attended both and was very honoured too. Things kicked off with the warmup DJ and this started off the night pretty well I thought in my opinion, and did a pretty good job for the mighty Regis (Karl O’Connor) from Sandwell District. As you can imagine, the minute he came on, he really went for it, no holds barred! By then, everyone was starting to fill the very small space and it was so good to hear him play again after his destruction at Plex with Ancient Methods. That was a pretty incredible night and I also reviewed that one. Each DJ had around 45 minutes to play and I can’t really describe it to you as much as I would like. It was one of those events/moments where you had to be there to fully experience the Boiler Room energy and feel of their sessions. The techno was so good, strong, powerful, whatever adjective you could have used to describe it! If the music puts a smile on your face, then it’s doing the right job and Regis was certainly doing the right job.
Next up were the very talented dup of Blawan and Pariah (Karenn). Their setup was pretty incredible. Analog hardware all over the place! It looked like they were building a time machine with power cables and adaptors poking out left, right and centre. It was the first time I had seen Karenn play, and previous I had seen Blawan playing warmup at Fabric, a few months back. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any harder than Regis, they cranked it up and the sounds that they were creating were real special! I would definitely recommend catching them play. Technically spot on. As it was Tuesday and a school night, it was nearly time to leave, but not until I had caught a bit of Surgeon. Already seen him 4 times this year, he really is an exceptional talent. A Birmingham legend in his own right and he picked up right where Karenn left off and continued to pulverised the soundsystem! More Techno Tuesdays are needed! It’s just one of those experiences, where you had to be there. It truly was a great occasion and nice to have a bit of fun on a weekday! Wow, what a great way to start the jaunts!

Next up was the successful Rejam party, run by very good friends and now beginning to make a big impact on the London scene. These boys have come from their humble beginnings at Public Life, to warming up for the big guns such as Drumcode/Cocoon and holding their own parties. What an achievement in such a short amount of time. Their effort has to be congratulated. Headlining for them was Detroit legend Daniel Bell (DBX). In my opinion, their best headliner to play for them. He really was pretty special and created for a great vibe at Basing House. By the time it was 1am, they place was comfortably busy and the usual Rejam crowd had filled the place. Alongside Bell, the residents Nick and Jack were playing as well as Peter Glasspool. It was a pleasure to see the boys play, as well as Bell and it certainly looks like a bright and promising future in 2013 for Rejam and their sound.
Next stop along the way on Saturday was a quick visit to the Antidote party at Cargo. Run by Dubgraffiti (Mark Jones), their parties have always been successful with a nice following. This time around ‘Hot Since 82’ headlined for them. Previous DJs’ to play for Antidote have been Doctor Dru, (who I reviewed a few weeks back), Gavin Herlihy and Sam Russo to play soon for them. I managed to catch some of Dubgraffiti’s set and Michael Penman’s set and it was a nice start before I ventured out to CLR. Really decent deep-tech house on a pretty impressive soundsystem in the main room of Cargo. None of that really flat, boring, generic stuff that you hear nowadays. It was thoroughly enjoyable and another party that I would recommend, run by decent, quality people.
Last but not least was the highlight of the weekend: CLR (Create, Learn, Realize) Run by Chris Liebing. This Techno imprint label has been running for over 10 years now and many renowned DJ’s and producers play and release on this label. At the forefront of Techno and with the talent of Black Asteroid, Terence Fixmer, Tommy Four Seven, Brian Sanhaji, Monoloc, DJ Emerson and new recruit: Rebekah playing for them, it sure is making marks in the Techno world. Located at The Sidings warehouse, 3 arches were taken up with EarToGround (ETG) having the 3rd arch for their showcase. Playing there were Dax J, Chris Stanford, Gareth Wild and Ashley Borg. In the next 2 arches were Chris Liebing, Terence Fixmer (Live), Brian Sanhaji (Live), Monoloc, DJ Emerson and Billy Allen. By the time I arrived, Monoloc was in the main room and Emerson in the 2nd arch with the EarToGround boys playing in the 3rd. I stayed in the 3rd arch to represent ETG and mostly in the first arch too. It was a shame as the 2nd arch wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be. It was really good to support the ETG crew and was nice to see many people out supporting them too. Too many highlights to mention as the whole night was pretty cool. Sanhaji and Liebing were unreal. Sanhaji played live and I was so impressed with what he created essentially. He smashed it too back in March, when CLR were over and he really did the business here. I managed to get some video if you look on my page. Wow, what a weekend! So much packed into one weekend, got to love those bumper action packed weekends! Same time, next week? 🙂
