Around the world in 80 labels: My Favourite Robot Records – Jared Simms, James Teej, and Voytek Korab

This year they have released no less than four singles that have demanded space on this very website. Whether that’s been down to the quality of cuts from the likes of Nitin, or tracks crafted by the hands of the head honchos extraordinaire it doesn’t really matter, each has been a delectable slice of electronic dancefloor fare informed by a love for house music, supported with remixes that are the epitome of varied.

With around three years behind them the My Favourite Robot Records crew would appear to be going from strength to strength, and continue to garner critical praise with apparent ease. All of which are points Messrs Simms, Teej, and Korab are understandably pretty happy about. Straight out of Toronto then, here’s what all three had to say when we asked them those same six questions, and created a mini-feature with an unimaginably long title.

Describe your imprint’s output.

We would compare it to the old days when you went to a record shop and flipped through a hundred records but walked out with two.  We try to find and release music that is unique and that means something to us. Our picks might not be everyone’s bag, but we’re fine with that. You can count on it to be raw, edgy, and you might even find the occasional song or two.

What would you say makes it different?

The label doesn’t sign music with a concrete musical direction in mind. Instead we focus on choosing music based on quality, originality, and the artist’s interpretation on what the label means to them.

What is it that makes you keep looking for new talent to expose?

The label’s earliest days were all about exposing new talent from Montreal & Toronto such as James Teej, Jonny White, MFR, Kenny Glasgow, Jordan Dare, and many others, to a wider international audience and we are quite proud of how we’ve managed to get the word out about our vision for music. For us, starting the label was the perfect way to get the music out unfiltered, and with the freedom to chart our own direction.  New talent helps create an identity for a label that is all its own. It’s a true indication of a label’s musical intention.

What’s the label’s pinnacle achievement so far?

We’re a bit too young for a pinnacle moment. We’ve only been potty trained for three weeks. We just like it that the music is getting heard!

If people were going to hear one release from your camp, what would you prefer it to be?

Our September 2011 release of MFR039 Dead Seal – Goldemine is a killer record with remixes from Droog & Inxec, Sid LeRock, and Adultnapper.  We’re not sure how we’d feel about someone trying to get the whole picture of the label from just one release though because we do mix it up quite a bit and, in a lot of ways, our back catalogue tells a story.

All being well, skip forward five years, where would you like things to be?

We’d like things to be next to us while we sit at the Robo-villa drinking margaritas and talking about the good ol’ days…
