Around the world in 80 labels: Dame-Music – Bloody Mary

For our next imprint of distinction we stick around in Berlin to shoot the summer breeze with one particular femme fatale that’s guaranteed to bring you round after a heavy night of nails techno. Introducing Bloody Mary, AKA Marjorie Migliaccio, a French ex pat who has resided in the German capital for some six years already.

In 2010 she founded Dame-Music with a party at Watergate and Sonar showcase, before releasing the well received compilation, Decadence, a collection of upbeat, bouncy tech sounds designed for just about any room with walls and speakers- whether that’s the warm up bar, basement, or your mate’s flat. Since then there have been tracks and remixes from the likes of Quenum, Sierra Sam, Jim Choi, and Argenis Brito to name but a few beside the boss-woman, all of which suggests we’re in the right place to discuss putting out cutting edge European electronic beats. Right then, here’s the label’s first lady on doing what they do.

Dame-Music (Germany) – Bloody Mary

Describe your imprint’s output.

I thought for two years about starting my own label as I found my own musical identity wasn’t too common. Dame-Music opened in June 2010, and I knew it would take a lot of work to be the owner, especially in between my DJ and production career, but I was confident too. I wanted to get my three big musical influences (rock, new wave and techno) together to make a difference within a dark and sexy canon of music.

What would you say makes it different?

I am not influenced by movements, I follow my heart. Every releases on Dame Music has to match my sensibility and mean something to me, I don’t believe the hype… This difference is shown in the logo, which references elegance and refinement, and I wanted it to have a touch of Frenchness.

What is it that makes you keep looking for new talent to expose?

Music is always going forward, so it is good to look for new sounds, new ideas and new artists all the time. It would be boring for me to constantly promote the same style of music. Each Dame-Music artist has a proper identity and each release is unique, that’s the label’s strength, bringing different colour in unity.

I started the label as I started producing by myself, so it’s also important that something of the imprint is in all the artist production work; this dark and sexy sound. In June we released Potluck on double vinyl, which is a good example of the whole idea- six tracks made by six Dame-Music artists in collaboration with friends from the label, with each track very different but still within the same Dame-Music style.

What’s the label’s pinnacle achievement so far?

The craziest thing that has happened so far to the label was being played during the day time on one of the major German radio stations with my track Spinning Around, which features Eyke and is taken from last year’s Arabesque EP

If people were going to hear one release from your camp, what would you prefer it to be?

I do not have particular preferences because, as I said before, every release is different and means something special to me. I would love people to hear everything.

All being well, skip forward five years, where would you like things to be?

First of all I would love vinyl to still be spinning on turntables… I cannot imagine myself in a near-future playing without MK2s. I started my career with them and I want to continue that way for a long time yet.
