It’s one of the lasting sounds of a decade defined by decadence, and light-hearted movies celebrating all that was youth. John Hughes, Matthew Broderick, John Candy, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe… the list of names that dominated the years in between 1979 and 1990 is long, and often comes complete with stories of cocaine, sleeze, and suites in hotels being booked out for months on end.
Yello is a name a few less people will recognise, which is more than a little unfortunate seen as the Swiss pair who use the moniker were responsible for an outright anthem of popcorn cinema, if such a thing has ever existed, in the shape of Oh Yeah– a track perhaps best known for its part in the ongoing sagas of Ferris Bueller, mid-day off. It obviously made a big impression on Leeds-based rising techno star Lee J. Malcolm, who is set to release a far more driving interpretation of the tune in just over a fortnight, via fresh-faced label EPM, before unveiling his debut album on the same imprint shortly after. Available from May 30th on digital download, the single package also includes a typically rough, and menacingly groovy Ben Sims remix, just for good measure. Reviews to follow.
