Nottingham City Guide

European Cities Clubbing Guide: Nottingham

Aside from Birmingham, Nottingham is the UK’s central-most clubbing city and boasts massive clubs, lively bars and low, low prices 7 days a week. It is also one of the most diverse in terms of musical offerings, with rock and indie firmly on the map whilst Gatecrasher, Oceana and Stealth, 3 huge dance and chart clubs, offer dance music fans top DJ’s and club nights night after night. The student population of Nottingham is massive with Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent equating to over 50,000 in total means that it is a city that parties 24/7. Many of the best nights are mid-week or Thursdays and tend to offer drinks deals and top DJ’s in comparison to the more pricey traditional Friday/Saturday celebrations.

Nottingham’s Best… Clubs

Stealth

A premier clubbing destination in the heart of the midlands, Stealth boasts great DJ’s, great club-nights and affordability every night of the week. With a ‘Funktion One’ Soundsystem, similar to that contained within the infamous Fabric, London, the tunes pump out at a volume which force you to get your feet moving.

It’s a multi-genre club too with music ranging from rock, pop and indie to dance, R’n’B and everything in between.

Rescue Rooms

The second part of Stealth, traditionally the alternative night to the main club venue, is aptly named The Rescue Rooms. Similarly high standards of sound quality and value-for-money make it a fantastic after-party venue which regularly hosts top DJ sets post-gig. It’s proximity to Stealth (next door) and Spanky Van Dykes, a new, contemporary bar/club means that once you’ve made your way into town you don’t need to spend hours walking between venues.

Gatecrasher

With a capacity of around 1400 and 4 rooms prepped for the very best DJ’s around Gatecrasher Nottingham is easily one of the UK’s best Gatecrasher venues. Coming with all the class and quality assured by the renowned clubbing brand Gatecrasher continually hosts the best talent on the decks and resists the temptation to charge you an arm and a leg for it too. Less than a fiver will usually get you in as long as you arrive before midnight and it’s 4-room variety means it’s money well spent whether you stick to the main room or venture into Arkade or Tunnel.

OCEANA

Nottingham’s Oceana is a gigantic 6-room, multi-level club boasting a 2500 person capacity and eye-catching décor, lighting and lineups. Oceana tends to leave the high-profile DJ bookings to the likes of Gatecrasher and Stealth instead opting to host different themed nights in its innovatively designed rooms. With a nautical theme ranging from ‘First Port’ to ‘Sydney Harbourside’ Oceana is like a huge party-ship docked permanently in the heart of Nottingham.

Nottingham’s Best… Bars & Pubs

Walkabout

Unfortunately there just aren’t enough independent, quirky, quaint bars and pubs to omit the likes of Australian-themed bar brand Walkabout from the list! Great food and brilliant Aussie beers are always a great way to start a night out and Nottingham’s Walkabout has an upbeat atmosphere and friendly bar staff for added enjoyment.

Spanky Van Dykes

Dubbed as an ‘eatery and party house’, Spanky’s is one of the newest bars in Nottingham, and the quirkiest. It plays host to DJ sets, after-parties and small live events most weeks and serves a fantastic range of drinks including the much sought-after cider-to-end-all-ciders Aspall. It’s 30 seconds from Stealth and Rescue Rooms making it the perfect pre-drinks bar before a night out.

Nottingham’s Best… Hangover Cures

The Horn in Hand is always a solid shout for a reliable morning-after breakfast or beer and burger combo. For something a little more fine-dining and less pub-grub Nottingham has a couple of brilliant restaurants and café-bistros to try out when your head’s thumping and mouth is dry.

The Wollaton

As an Observer Food Monthly award winner you might expect the menu at The Wollaton to break the bank but fear not, as winner of the ‘Best Pub Food’ category the traditional, grass-roots approach to quality British food comes at an appetizing price. The Wollaton Full English is just under £8 and well worth every penny. Hangovers cured, guaranteed!

Delilah Fine Foods – Café & Deli

Whether it’s a scrambled egg ciabatta or hearty full English Delilah offers a menu packed full of quality ingredients and value-for-money.
